Tribute to Peter Russell, CC, FRSC, OC

By Robert O’Brien

In the annals of Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy Peter Russell stands as an irreplaceable figure. Serving as our Society Chair from 2001 to 2003, he guided us onto the path of modernization and relevance, elevating our standing immeasurably. His credibility and credentials became the cornerstone of our organization.

Peter's association with our Board began in 1998, a tenure that endured until the last few years, when health constraints prevented his attendance at meetings. However, his commitment never waned, and he graced our gatherings, notably the 40th Anniversary Dinner on November 29th, where his presence was a highlight. As Chair, he honored distinguished Canadians like Roy Romanow, Flora MacDonald, and Lloyd Axworthy with the Society's Award for Excellence. The speakers he secured for us, including Sir Martin Gilbert, Lord Andrew Roberts, and John Plumpton, exemplified the caliber he brought to our events.

Peter Russell's prolific writing found a special place for our Society in his book, "Two Cheers for Minority Government," dedicated to our Society.

A linchpin and champion of the Atlantic Charter commemoration, Peter organized events in St Johns and Argentia, Newfoundland. Not even the challenges of COVID could deter him from flying to Newfoundland in August 2021 to speak personally about the Charter's importance.

In his extraordinary commitment to the Churchill Society, Peter Russell left an indelible mark. Though he never stood as the principal speaker at our Annual Dinner, his contributions, including introductions, toasts, and tributes, enriched our events. His writings for the Churchilliad and his publication on the Atlantic Charter epitomized Professor Peter Russell at his best.

Peter Russell's passion for Churchill, his dedicated service as Chair and his unwavering commitment to our Society for over 25 years resonate as a testament to an exceptional Canadian. We consider ourselves fortunate and blessed to have known him. In his absence, we mourn the loss of an indispensable man whose impact will endure in our hearts and the history of the Churchill Society.

The Churchill Society has made a donation in honour of Peter to the University of Toronto Senior College Peter Russell Scholarship in Lifecourse, Aging and Retirement.
