Watch the Recording: Hong Kong: A Wake-up Call for Democracies?

On June 10, 2021, the Churchill Society hosted a panel discussion on the recent alarming events in Hong Kong and what it means for the people of Hong Kong and for democracies throughout the world.

The panel featured three distinguished commentators - each with deep insight into the behaviour of one of the People's Republic of China and an informed perspective on events in Hong Kong since the transition of 1997 and the present threat to Hong Kong's democratic traditions:

Michael Chong, MP for Wellington-Halton Hills. Conservative foreign affairs critic and member of the Special Committee on Canada-China Relations. An outspoken critic of the erosion of democratic rights in Hong Kong.

Cherie Wong, founder and executive director of Alliance Canada Hong Kong (ACHK), a grassroots community organization that has mobilized the Hong Konger-Canadian communities to take civic actions in support of the democratic development of Hong Kong.

Craig Scott, professor of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School, Rhodes Scholar, former clerk for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. A former Toronto area NDP MP with experience in constitutional, human rights and democracy, and international law involvements outside of Canada.
