The Honourable
Sheila M. Copps
PC OC
2018 Recipient of the Award for Excellence in the Cause of Parliamentary Democracy
No Canadian political career represents Parliament’s role in holding government to account more than the career of Sheila Copps: veteran of Queen's Park and the House of Commons (on both sides of the floor) and now a journalist commenting from Ottawa for the Hill Times. An outspoken feminist, Ms. Copps held numerous portfolios with responsibility for the national broadcast system and parks & environment, and served as Canada’s first woman Deputy Prime Minister. As Minister of Canadian Heritage, Copps spearheaded the creation of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity.
